Dorados in Juramento River Salta Part II

So we were saying the fishing was hard at the beginning and we had spent a lot of time casting on the different river structures. But we had a wonderful day ahead in this new destination for Dorados.

The fist Dorado was caught with a black fly, with some green hair. The second one was with a black and yellow fly.

During the morning we had some more bites but the weather changed; the wind had started blowing, it was harder to get the flies into the right places, which made it difficult to get more fish. At midday the guides built up a camp by the river for lunch. We ate the famous sandwich de milanesa. Just like BLT or hamburguers are so representative of the USA, sandwiches de milanesa speak loud of Argentina. Bread, some lettuce, tomato, mayonaise and a milanesa, which is basically a beef schnitzel. We also had some other snacks, some eggs, cereal bars, alfajores, some fruit, fresh drinks.

Later we went back to the river. Blake and David shared the boat this time, and I did so with Juan on a different boat.

The afternoon got cold, which was not a good forecast for the Dorado fishing. Besides, the wind was already blowing, making the casting difficult. There were some fish biting, and we got some fish, too. There was one beautiful dorado caught by Pablo. It was about 4-5 pounds. I caught it in the shore structure. We had been trying there for some time and Agustin, our guide, just couldnt believe we couldnt get a Dorado from that part of the river. He had just finished uttering his comment when I got the fish. We laughed at the coincidence. The overall experience was fantastic, although the weather was not so good. Fishing the Juramento river is not easy, and whent the climatic conditions do not help, it gets even more difficult. We’re going to try this river again with great weather conditions, mainly in the upper part of the river towards the area of the towns el Galpon and Joaquin B Gonzalez.

The guide picked us up from the river at about 6 pm and after 40 minutes we were enjoying a cool beer and some snacks, sharing the annecdotes, lamenting our bad lack with the weather, enjoying some appetizers and delicious pizza. We had some cocktails, too.

Dorado or golden Dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) is a large river fish found in central and east-central South America. Despite having Salminus in its name, the Dorado is not related to any species of salmon, nor to the saltwater fish also called Dorado. It is very popular among recreational anglers and supports large commercial fisheries.

The golden Dorado has a large head, with powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth. It reaches maturity around 37 cm (15 in) long, and is golden colored. The average size of the golden Dorado is about 3–10 kg (6.6–22.0 lb). The largest recorded size is 100 cm (39 in) length and 31.4 kg (69 lb).The golden Dorado lives in warm freshwater habitats and they eat a wide variety of prey fish. One of the Dorado’s favorite prey is the sabalo, a type of schooling fish typically 1–4 kg (2–9 lb) in weight.

The aggressive nature of the dorado, its high jumps, great fighting strength, and stamina have created a competitive market among anglers from all corners of the world, traversing South American waters in hopes of hooking a dorado. Ultimately, it has been recognized as a very important fly-fishing targeted species. Its aggressive behavior, fast runs, impressive strength, and brave fighting - frequently going airborne in the attempt to loosen itself from the hook, make this species a must-fish for fly fishermen.

The season for fishing Dorado in the waters of Juramento River in the province of Salta (North of Argentina) goes from the 1st March to the 30th November.

We hope you guys join us in this amazing destination that Pointer Fly Fishing is offering for some of the best Dorado in Argentina in a great combination of Juramento and El Dorado River with Akejandro Haro’s organization.
