Accommodations

You will stay in traditional Mongolian gers which are a collapsible collwooden frame wreapped around by a felt tents, this tents are much larger than a standard tents. They are 9 feet high and 18 feet in diameter.

They are equipped with wooden floors, electricity, framed full-length single beds, ample room for storing gear, and an area to sit down & relax by a wood stove. Accommodates 2 fishermen.

Each camp has a very nice shower building and a very nice lodge where meals and drinks are served.

Sample itinerary

Sunday: Arrive in Mongolia via Seoul, South Korea or Beijing, China. You will be met at the airport by a representative of Hovsgol Travel Company. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar. You will be staying at the Hovsgol Hotel. The hotel is located near downtown and has a Brazilian barbecue restaurant on the main floor. Dinner is on your own. Please remember the package price includes airport transfers in Mongolia and hotel lodging the night before departure to camp and the night after returning from camp. Breakfast is provided at the hotel, but dinner and incidental expenses in Ulaanbaatar are the responsibility of individual clients.

Monday : After breakfast at 9:00 a.m. transfer to airport for flight to camp. Fish upon arrival if time permits. We will either use a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft to access the camp. The air charter for the camp will leave at a pre-established time on Monday. It is your responsibility to insure that you are in Ulaanbaatar in time to make the charter. In the event you miss the charter, we will try to arrange for a commercial aircraft to fly you to Muren, the provincial capital at your expense. From that point, you will take a jeep to camp. The estimated cost to you for this option will be about $325 per person. In the event you decide to charter directly to camp, this will also be your responsibility.

Tuesday to Sunday : Six full days of fishing at camp. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m. and afterwards you will depart for a full day of fishing. Lunch is prepared at the lodge each morning or by the guide on the river. Lunch consists of homemade soups, sandwiches, bread and salads. If you have any dietary requests, please be certain to let us know ahead of time so that the chef can accommodate. Appetizers and dinner will be served in the evenings after everyone is back at the lodge.

Monday: Have breakfast in camp. Depart camp and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar around 3:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. Spend the night in Ulaanbaatar at Hovsgol Hotel. Dinner is on your own.

Tuesday: Transfer to airport for return trip via Seoul or Beijing.

The fishing

The guide staff at the camps consist of highly experienced guides, who are professionals and well respected in the fly fishing world. They are very personable and will do everything possible to make your fishing vacation in Mongolia a memorable one.

Gear and equipment

Over the years we have found several fly lines that work best for taimen and are suited to casting the larger fly patterns we use to catch them. For single handed rods, our favorite line is Rio’s Outbound (coldwater. It has a fatter head than most lines allowing the angler to turn over large flies easily. For two handed rods, the Rio Skagit

Flight head with 30 pound running lines seems to workthe best.

For taimen we recommend 8,9 or 10 weight and also floating, sink-tip and sinking lines (t-200, t-300) and for Lenok a 3, 4 or 5 and floating line only.

Guides will have all the leader and tippet that you will need for fishing.

Travelling here

You will arrive in Mongolia from Seoul, South Korea or Beijing, China then you will take a flight to the camp.

On the very last day you will fly back to Ulaanbaatar and then take a flight for your return via Seoul or Beijing.

Itinerary in brief

Arrival Day

On Sunday you will arrive in Mongolia from Seoul, South Korea or Beijing, China. You will stay at the Hovsgol Hotel and then on Monday at 9:00 am you will be transported to the airport for your flight to the camp.

Tuesday - Sunday

Six full days of fishing at camp. You will depart for fishing after your 8:00 am breakfast for a full day of fishing. Lunch is prepared at the lodge or by the guide on the river. Appetizers and dinner will be served in the evenings after everyone is back at the lodge.

Departure Day

You will depart camp to fly back to Ulaanbaatar on Monday after breakfast. Spend the night at the Hovsgol Hotel and on Tuesday transfer to the airport for your return trip via Seoul or Beijing.
